Here is an episode of Ghost Cases that I found the most interesting, and which still baffles me over a year later - an investigation of the cemetery and grounds of St. Edith's church in Shocklach, England with our good friends Dave Sadler and Steve Mera from the Unknown Phenomena Investigation Association. Some very strange things happened that evening back in May, 2009, that tested the limits of my skepticism.

Did we experience something paranormal? I can't say for sure. All that I can say is that it was definitely the weirdest night of investigation I've ever experienced. There was so much going on, and we had the opportunity to look for answers, i.e. a possible sound that could account for the horse's hooves that Holly and I heard, or a light source to account for the light that Steve observed, but we couldn't come up with anything. Of course, we also didn't obtain any hard evidence, such as audio or video recordings, of what we experienced.

So, the reasonable person might ask - what conclusions did I draw from all of this?

None, really. I can't explain what happened, nor can I prove it to someone who wasn't there. I'm not sure that I can even prove it to myself.

Is there a rational explanation for everything that happened? Perhaps. However, there's a part of me that says otherwise - a part of me that believes we may have actually encountered something truly anomalous that evening, perhaps even something paranormal.

I fully intend to return to Shocklach church, sooner rather than later, to spend some more time there, and see if the events of my first trip repeat themselves. As Dave Sadler said to me before we got there, it's a special place.

The New Light Experience of Henry Alline

Way back in 2000, we filmed a pilot for a series on Vision TV, about great Canadians of faith. I still think it was a wonderful idea, but we were just starting out as a production company, and we made some bad choices - like getting me to host it! We also had a very limited pilot-type budget. Still, I remain an admirer of Henry Alline, the subject of the pilot episode (the series was not picked up) to this day, and I'm proud of the writing in this pilot episode, which was based on my graduate studies in history. I've re-edited the original version in what is, I think, now a better film, and something closer to what I would have done if I could travel back in time with what I know now and do it again.

Incidentally, while I had a lot of great professors in college over the years, Dr. Moody was perhaps the one who influenced me the most. It was a pleasure to work with him years after I had graduated from Acadia.

Denise Djokic: Seven Days, Seven Nights

Before there was a television series called The Classical Now, there was a documentary about Denise Djokic and David Jalbert that I did for Bravo in 2002 by the same name (which I then decided to use for the series). To avoid confusion, and because the network wanted to focus on Denise, the doc was renamed Denise Djokic: Seven Days, Seven Nights for broadcast, but to me, it will always be The Classical Now, because it's about both Denise and David, and where classical music fits into our society today. Of all the films I've done, this was the one I had the most fun making, for a lot of reasons. I am uploading, in five parts, a slightly re-edited version, never seen before.

Episode 7, part 4 of the A & E Biography series My Ghost Story, about the Algonquin Hotel in St. Andrew's, New Brunswick, features my Ghost Cases co-host Holly Stevens and footage from the second episode of our series. You can view the A & E segment here.

I wish the producers had spent more time placing the incident in context, but that's American television for you - a lot of flash, and a lot of quick edits and special effects, sometimes at the expense of the story itself. Still, the segment is well done, Holly did a great job, and the footage remains compelling.

The World Premiere of the Nova Scotia-shot feature drama Eternal Kiss will take place at Park Lane theatres, Halifax, Thursday April 28th from 6 to 9 pm.

Eternal Kiss is a contemporary vampire tale concerning a modern-day documentary filmmaker (played by Montreal actor Joe Gallaccio) who investigates whether stories of vampirism are real or not. He ends up getting more than he bargained for.

Triple threat producer/writer/director Paul Kimball shifts the focus back to the romantic era origins of the story, which began when poets Lord Byron, Shelley, Mary Shelley and Dr. John Polidori challenged each other to write tales of dread, horror and longing in the summer of 1816.

With quotes from the romantic poets alongside current pop culture references, Eternal Kiss blends contemporary and more enduring themes in its chamber-like treatment of the vampire trope, complete with site-specific references such as Harker’s Cove and Canadian Forces Base Carfax. Filmed in Shelburne, there’s lingering Gothic sensibility throughout the project.

Sporting a range of gray tones in its colour palette, Eternal Kiss resembles Ingmar Bergman’s mid-60s work, such as Persona and Hour Of the Wolf when that Northern European master mixed terse issues of identity with strong undertones of horror.

Much shooting takes place at night with a deliberate lack of establishing and landscape shots, Kimball’s film emphasizes feelings of dislocation and looming desire. Eternal Kiss is an intense and personal trip into the Vampire world; it is as unsettling as it is engrossing.

Eternal Kiss also features East Coast actors Carly Street, David Connellan and Nigel Bennett. It was financed with the assistance of Film Nova Scotia and California based distributors will release the film internationally later this year.

So that folks outside of eastern Canada - where the show airs on Eastlink TV - can see what Ghost Cases is about, I've posted the most recent episode, which premiered on Sunday, October 25th, on YouTube.

In this episode, we worked with a psychic, so there isn't a lot of the "tech" stuff. Other episodes are more "tech" oriented. Our approach was to be willing to try anything, because frankly there is no real science to "ghost investigation" and we shouldn't automatically close the door on the possibility that more esoteric methods might provide some insight.

A review of Ghost Cases, from an advance screener I sent to Joe Harvat at Department 47.

Paul was good enough to forward me an advance copy of Episode Two of Ghost Cases. I had the chance to watch it Friday night and I have to tell you I really enjoyed it.

Ghost Cases takes a little different approach from what you might be used to on Ghost Hunters. In this particular episode, Paul and Holly visited a rural farm house in which seemingly paranormal activity was making life pretty uncomfortable for its living occupants. I felt Paul and Holly took the time to tell you a little more about what these people were experiencing and how it affected their lives. Like in most UFO cases, the only concrete thing we usually have is the witnesses, and understanding them may give us our best clue to understanding the phenomenon. You also get to know a bit more about the hunters too. You understand that Paul and Holly are just normal people with normal fears and foibles who just happened to be engaged in an unusual activity.

Ghost Cases is not so technology-centric as Ghost Hunters. For example, they are assisted by a psychic in this case - something I believe that Ghost Hunters used to do but abandoned for a more science-based approach. I would certainly like to see a follow-up to the case to see whether the psychic's efforts had any real or lasting effect on the manifestations there.

As a former TV guy, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that the production values and videography were quite good - at some points rather artistic. They kept a few miscues in it (people sometimes at a momentary loss for words and such). I liked that. It gave it more of a sense of reality - in stressful situations, sometimes you do struggle for words.

I hope they pick up the show down here. I think it would be a thoughtful counter-point to some of the overwrought shows we get in the States.

Christina Cuffari (left, above), who will be playing Staphanie Fielding in Eternal Kiss in just a couple of weeks, is currently performing at the 2008 Boulder International Fringe Festival as Jane in the sci-fi mystery "Doing Time", which I co-wrote with my good friend Mac Tonnies, an American author.

I'm out in Boulder "directing" the play right now - I put "directing" in quotation marks because when you have actors as talented and hard-working as Christina and her co-star, Annie Briggs (right, above), there isn't a whole lot for a director to do once the play starts but sit back and watch the magic unfold!

So, here I am in sunny Los Angeles, hanging out with my good pal Greg Bishop - not a cloud in the sky! Hurrah!!

The end of the International UFO Convention and Film Festival was great - super banquet, lots of nice folks, some very good films (and therefore some great competition), and a WIN for Best Evidence, in the category that probably meant the most to me, as a guy with a history degree - Best Historical Documentary. Lovely statue!

I can't remember what I said in my stumbling "aw shucks" acceptance speech, other than thanking my Mom & Dad in particular, and ending with "God Save the Queen", which was a running joke all week between we Canucks and Brits on one side, and our southern cousins the Yankee Doodles on the other. I thanked everyone in general who worked on the film, or who helped get it made, but the list of names was too long to be specific. However, here are some I absolutely should have mentioned, and who I wish had been there to see their hard work pay off:

Denise Djokic: Seven Days Seven Nights

Someone asked me the other day what I thought my best film was, and I had no hesitation in answering that it was the 2003 documentary Denise Djokic: Seven Days Seven Nights, that I made for Bravo. Here's the conclusion from the film:

Denise and David are two of the best young classical musicians out there today, and it was a special experience for me to bring the story of their tour in northern British Columbia, where you might not expect to find much classical music, to Canadian television.

Best Evidence at the 2008 International UFO Congress and Film Festival

We received official confirmation this afternoon that Best Evidence: Top 10 UFO Sightings, has been accepted into the 2008 International UFO Conference and Film Festival, which is held in Laughlin, Nevada, from February 23rd until March 1st. I'll be there from Tuesday evening until the closing gala on Saturday, where I hope the film picks up awards in the categories in which it has been nominated - Best UFO documentary (under 60 minutes), Best UFO historical documentary, and Best Animation in a UFO film... along with the People's Choice Award, for which all films are eligible. Regardless, it will be good to get back to Laughlin, which has over the past few years become a sort of second home for me... or at least it seems that way!

Details as to the screening date when the Conference makes them available. They tell me that they are going to try and slot the film in on either the Thursday or Friday evening, so that I can be there to introduce it, which would be great.

Greg Bishop has been studying UFOs and the paranormal for most of his life. His first article on the subject was published in 1988. In his book Project Beta: The Story of Paul Bennewitz, National Security, and the Creation of a Modern UFO Myth (2005 Simon & Schuster/ Pocket Books) he wrote about a government campaign of disinformation perpetrated against an unsuspecting U.S. citizen.

The no-man’s land between the extremes of wide-eyed belief and closed-minded debunkery has fascinated Greg and led to the birth of a magazine he co-founded called The Excluded Middle, which was a journal of UFOs, conspiracy research, psychedelia and new science (now online at Excluded Middle). Wake Up Down There, a collection of articles from the magazine, was published in 2000. His third book, Weird California, a portrait of strange and eerie history and places in the Golden State, was released by Sterling Publishers and Barnes & Noble in March of 2006.

Greg’s current writing can be seen daily at the blogsite UFO Mystic, which is co-hosted by noted paranormal author Nick Redfern. Greg’s writing has appeared in the L.A. Weekly, Fortean Times, UFO Magazine, Magical Blend, The Nose, Book Happy, and in the book-length anthologies Conspiracy And Cyberculture, Zen And The Art of Close Encounters, Kooks, and You Are Being Lied To. His article “Ethnic Weapons For Ethnic Cleansing” was included in the top 20 of the most underreported stories of 2001 by the media watchdog group Project Censored. He has appeared on numerous radio shows, including Coast 2 Coast Am, Strange Days... Indeed, The X-Zone, and Binnall of America.

For two years (until it was shut down by the FCC) Greg hosted The Hungry Ghost, a radio show of interviews and music airing on a pirate FM station in Los Angeles. His current show, Radio Misterioso can be heard on Sundays from 8-10 PM PST at Kill Radio. Interviews with fringe-topic researchers and weird music are the usual fare.

Greg served as staff consultant to the TNN program The Conspiracy Zone, hosted by Kevin Nealon. He has also appeared in interviews for The Discovery Channel and Virgin Media Television, and in Redstar Films documentary Fields of Fear. He is also an associate producer and main interview subject for the forthcoming documentary Mirage Men, due for release in 2008. He will also be appearing as an interview subject for the forthcoming Disney DVD release of National Treasure II: Book of Secrets, starring Nicholas Cage. In 1985, Greg co-wrote a screenplay entitled Fangs, which was optioned by an independent Los Angeles production company.
Greg currently works in the film and television industry in Los Angeles, where he also lives, not too far from Hollywood Boulevard. He is a die-hard Los Angeles Dodgers fan.

Synchronicity to premiere on January 26, 2007 on Bravo

Synchronicity, a performance-based film featuring renowned Canadian classical musicians Heather Schmidt (composer - pianist) and Shauna Rolston (cellist), will premiere on Bravo on Jan. 26, 2008 at 7 pm EST / 8 pm AST.

Synchronicity was shot in June, 2007 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and features Schmidt and Rolston performing a series of works written by Schmidt, including the brand new work "Synchronicity", which was commissioned specifically for the film.

Redstar to open US Office

The news has filtered into the media here in Halifax, and I've been asked by a number of friends if it's actually true, so I guess I should confirm it - Redstar Films Limited, which has spent the past eight years producing quality television programming for the Canadian market, including a number of well-received films about the UFO phenomenon, is going to expand into the United States in 2008, with the opening of an affiliate office in Los Angeles, sometime in the late spring.

Who will be heading up the US operation initially, you might ask?

None other than my good friend, and alleged CIA agent, Greg Bishop, who has been involved with both UFOs and the film and television industry for many years now (as we chatted tonight, I learned for the first time that Greg optioned a vampire screenplay when he was 22 years old).

Why a US office? A number of reasons, not the least being the access to a much larger market, particularly for the type of quirky, off-the-beaten-track kind of programming that I like to produce. Also, a few specific opportunities for 2008 have arisen, so, as the Romans would say, "carpe diem".

Does this mean the end of Redstar Films in Canada? Of course not - the head office will continue to be in Halifax, Nova Scotia, run by the fall of 2008 by my brother, Jim.

Which begs the question: where will I be?

Let's just say that Greg and I will be discussing business while chowing down on Dodger dogs and trying to catch a glimpse of Vin Scully, in 2008.

The future looks bright for Redstar.
